Gouverneur Talc Company, Inc. is a mining and milling operation in the Gouverneur district of New York State. Two milling operations and several mining operations are located on over 2,300 acres of land. Gouverneur Talc Company employs 105 individuals.

The Process
The milling operations include dry-grinding, air-milling and air-classification processes. The mines are both open pit and underground.

The Products
Two very different types of minerals are mined. The largest volume mineral is a tremolitic talc, sold under the trade names NYTAL^® and CERAMITALC^®. Chemically, tremolitic talc is magnesium silicate (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2).

The other mineral is wollastonite which is sold under the trade name VANSIL^®. Chemically, wollastonite is calcium silicate (CaSiO3).

Markets
NYTAL^® Talc and CERAMITALC^® are used in ceramic formulations to make products like wall tiles, dinnerware, sanitaryware, and hobby ceramics. VANSIL^® wollastonite is used in ceramic products like wall tiles, dinnerware, and sanitaryware, and as a filler and reinforcing agent in plastics. Both products contribute high-fired brightness, low shrinkage, and strength to ceramic products. In addition, NYTAL^® contributes high brightness and durability to paint coatings and is a cost-effective extender and filler in paint formulations.

The Company’s priorities are to protect its employees, its neighbors and the environment. Employees take part in annual Mine Safety and Health Administration trainings. The Company recycles its waste through local waste handling companies. The Company has an active Total Quality Management program and has been ISO-9002 certified since 1998.

The Company encourages its employees to participate in local activities, and contributes to employee-supported activities such as the Boy Scouts of America, local public school activities including scholarship funds, E. J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur Public Library and the Gouverneur Fire Department.

The Vice-President and General Manager of Gouverneur Talc Company is a member of the board of directors of the E. J. Noble Hospital and the Gouverneur Chamber of Commerce.
