mining operations and two chemical manufacturing facilities, all wholly-owned subsidiaries.
The Gouverneur district in northeastern New York State, a major talc and wollastonite producing area, is the location of R.T. Vanderbilt Company’s largest mining and minerals processing plant, Gouverneur Talc Company, Inc. Here, on over 2,300 acres, advanced techniques are used to manufacture the high quality product sold under the trade names NYTAL® and CERAMITALC®, which is the most widely used talc in the paint and ceramics industries. Gouverneur Talc Company also manufactures VANSIL® wollastonite for the paint, ceramics and plastics industries. Dixie Clay Company mines and processes kaolin clay on 3,000 acres in Bath, South Carolina. Its reserves are estimated at 200 years. Kaolin, an hydrous aluminum silicate, is one of nature’s purest minerals. It has been called a universal mineral filler because of its chemical stability. Commonly employed as a functional filler in rubber, paint, paper and plastics, it is also an important ingredient in ceramics, with uses in refractories, glassware, electrical insulators and fiberglass. Soft and hard grades of clay from different ore bodies or mines are blended in order to achieve the desired result for each customer’s application. Standard Mineral Company, Inc., located on 1500 acres in Robbins, North Carolina, mines and processes pyrophyllite ore to produce PYRAX®. PYRAX® is used as a diluent and carrier for pesticides, and as an ingredient in paints, wall tiles and refractories. Vanderbilt Minerals Corporation has various mining locations in Nevada and California, where smectite clay for VEEGUM® is mined. The raw material is crushed and stored at Beatty, Nevada, prior to being shipped to our processing facility in Murray, Kentucky. Vanderbilt Chemical Corporation, conveniently located at the center of the market in Murray, Kentucky, is one of the major rubber chemical manufacturing facilities in the country. This state-of-the-art chemical plant is a computerized complex including manufacturing, warehousing, laboratory and service facilities. In addition to rubber chemicals, VANLUBE®, petroleum additives and specialty chemicals such as the paint dryer ACTIV-8® are manufactured here. Vanderbilt Minerals Corporation’s VEEGUM® processing plant is also located at Murray. Vanderbilt Chemical Corporation’s second plant is located in Bethel, Connecticut, twenty miles from R.T. Vanderbilt Company’s corporate headquarters in Norwalk. The facility includes a pilot plant and production facilities for the manufacture of organic chemicals. Products developed in our research laboratories are placed into pilot plant production at Bethel to evaluate whether they are suitable for commercial production. The manufacture of relatively small quantities of specialty chemicals is also accomplished here. |
