BORATE ESTER ANTIWEAR TECHNOLOGY

By Thomas J. Karol, Ph.D. and
Steven G. Donnelly (Manager of Technical Services)

The R.T. Vanderbilt Company is currently test marketing a borated friction modifier (VANLUBE® 289). We have found unexpectedly good antiwear performance for this additive. VANLUBE 289 is a non-phosphorous, non-sulfur additive which provides antiwear performance exceeding ZnDTPs in our bench screening test (Modified Falex Pin & Vee Block Procedure). VANLUBE 289 is an excellent candidate for an antiwear agent to meet the proposed ILSAC GF-4 Performance Standards that places limits on both phosphorus ( 0.05% max.) and sulfur (0.50% max.) in the finished passenger car engine oil . Please contact our R.T. Vanderbilt Petroleum Sales Department at  Petroleum Group to arrange to participate in the test market evaluation of this new technology.

Chemistry of VANLUBE 289

A mixture of alkyl diethanol amides and mono glycerides where R represents a carbon chain from C7-C17. VANLUBE 289 is a partially borated conversion with 1 m% boron.

The borates are believe to exist mainly in the following forms:

The following animation depicts how the diol and borated diol species are attracted and coordinated to the metal surface. This action brings the oil into more intimate contact with the surface which thus affords better wear properties and acts as a lubricity agent. The borate in addition can form an iron borate with the metal surface and as a result applies a hard surface layer directly to the metal. This affords an additional level of protection against wear.

VANLUBE 289 was compared to zinc dithiophosphate in oil by Falex Pin + Vee block, VANLUBE 289 is borated OD-869B (ashless friction modifier) with 1.0 m% boron.

VANLUBE 289 ran the whole time, 60 minutes, while duplicate runs with ZnDTP failed within 10 seconds from the start. The 60 minute time for VANLUBE 289 is not a fluke, in other tests it ran ~ 192 and ~ 86 minutes before it failed.
