Standard Mineral Company, Inc. started operations at its Robbins, North Carolina location in the 1920’s. The Company owns over 1,500 acres of land that have reserves in excess of 100 years. The plant is currently staffed with 36 employees.

The Process
Pyrophyllite ore is mined in several open-pit mines and is crushed, dry-ground and air-classified at the Company’s mill in Robbins. Chemically, pyrophyllite is aluminum silicate (Al2Si4O10(OH)2). The processed pyrophyllite ore is sold under the trade name PYRAX®.

The Product
Several grades of PYRAX are differentiated by particle size, moisture content, fired color, and purity as measured by fineness and screen residue.

Markets
PYRAX is used primarily in ceramic formulations. It imparts strength to fired ceramics products and is used in ceramic tiles, sanitaryware, dinnerware and refractory products. PYRAX is also used as a carrier for agricultural chemicals and as a filler in industrial coatings, sealants and caulks.

Commitment to Safety and the Environment
The Company’s priorities are to protect its employees, its neighbors and the environment. The Company works closely with State and Federal authorities to accomplish this goal and has active programs for water control, reforestation of cut timber and reclamation of mining operations.

The Company encourages its employees to participate in local activities, and contributes to employee-supported activities such as the Robbins Fire Department, rescue squads, school athletic associations, and United Way. The Company is a member of the Robbins Chamber of Commerce, and the Vice-President and General Manager is a member of the Robbins Economic Development and Planning Board.
