Markets
The Company’s products serve the rubber and plastic additives industries, the petroleum oil additive industry, the coatings and the building materials industries. The products function as "accelerators" or as "antioxidants" for rubber compounds. An accelerator shortens the time required to produce thermoset products. An antioxidant prevents degradation from heat of rubber and plastic and is used in making under-the-hood automobile parts, as well as high voltage wire and cable insulating materials. In the petroleum oil additive business, the Company’s products, sold under the trade names MOLYVAN® and VANLUBE®, improve the performance of lubricating oils, greases and fluids under high temperature and extreme pressure conditions. In addition, several specialty products are used as friction reducers, antiwear additives, and corrosion inhibitors. For the paint industry, ACTIV-8® and ACTIV-8 HGL are powerful chelating agents used to increase the activity of standard paint drying systems. ACTIV-8 is also used in electroplating, paper-pulping and corrosion-inhibiting applications. VANCIDE® products are used as anti-microbial additives in the paint coatings and building materials industries.

Commitment to Safety and the Environment
Vanderbilt Chemical Corporation's priorities are to protect the health and safety of its employees, its community and the environment. The Company is an active member of American Chemistry Council and fully supports its Responsible Care® program.

At both Bethel and Murray, the Company has ongoing training and safety improvement programs. Active waste minimization programs are maintained. The Company has ISO-9002 certified quality systems. The Company also achieved RCMS® certification in 2006.

At Bethel, the Company encourages its employees to participate in local activities, and contributes to community activities such as the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department, the Bethel Police Department, the local public schools and the Visiting Nurses Association.

At Murray, the Safety and Health Department works with the Occupational Safety and Health Department at Murray State University to provide students many "real-life" examples of how safety and health programs function in a chemical plant environment. Various plant tours are given throughout the year with emphasis placed on what the students are studying at the time of the tour. Several MSU students have completed semester internships in recent years. The Murray plant has also donated various safety and health related equipment to MSU to be used in labs and as instructional aids.

Plant management personnel at both sites are active members in their Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPC). Also, the plants work with local emergency response agencies to minimize community impact in the event of an emergency. Local agencies participate in regular emergency response pre-planning meetings and plant tours.
