Product Support Chemist (Vanderbilt Minerals, LLC (Norwalk, CT))

Research & Development Department

Vanderbilt Minerals, LLC is the premier source for natural rheology control, serving global personal care, pharmaceutical, animal care, agricultural, ceramics, coatings, and Household, Industrial & Institutional markets.  Vanderbilt Minerals is looking for a chemist to provide technical support to promote Vanderbilt Minerals products, with a focus on formulation.

Primary Functions:

  • Develop prototype formulations to promote Vanderbilt Minerals products with a focus on the personal care, cosmetic, and OTC markets.
  • Evaluate prototype formulations for stability and performance.
  • Conduct research to determine quality and performance of new Vanderbilt Minerals products, as well as competitive raw materials.
  • Maintain accurate lab notebook and other records.
  • Document all research activities effectively in written reports.
  • Participate in the development of technical literature and promotional materials.
  • Support technical service projects for internal and external customers.
  • Ensure that all quality and safety procedures are followed.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or B.A. in Chemistry or Biology, or other related field
  • 3+ years formulation experience in the personal care, cosmetic, or pharmaceutical industries
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to write effective lab reports
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office

COA (Certification of Analysis) Specialist (Vanderbilt Global Services, LLC (Norwalk, CT))

Job Summary:

Monitors resale vendor quality data for Vanderbilt Chemicals, LLC (VC), and COA contacts for Vanderbilt Chemicals, LLC (VC), & Vanderbilt Minerals, LLC (VM).

Job Duties:

  • Monitors receipt of quality data from resale vendors.
  • Enters quality data into SAP and releases material into inventory for resale vendors.
  • Completes inspections for returned material.
  • Completes recurring inspections for overaged material.
  • Creates COA contact set ups for new customer accounts.
  • Changes COA contact attributes when necessary.
  • Re-issues COA’s for customer requests and fax or email failures.
  • Generates and issues COA’s for direct shipments.
  • Generate waivers when requested.
  • Reoccurring Material processing.
  • Identifies and fixes COA problems, internal and external.
  • Review of Customer Specifications and Requirements.
  • Handling customer requests for material retesting and recertification.
  • Bethel Location support-e.g. data entry.
  • Backup support for Quality Assurance Associate in handling Customer Complaints: initiating and investigating internal and external corrective actions, processing, and issuing customers material returns.

Technology Support Engineer (Vanderbilt Global Services, LLC (Norwalk, CT))

Information Technology Department

Vanderbilt Global Services, LLC is accepting applications for a Technology Support Engineer in our Information Technology Department.

This position is responsible for delivering technology support services to users of companywide internal and external client computer systems.  Resolves complex and everyday service requests relating to client computer hardware, operating system, application and phone problems and malfunctions; interacts and consults with clients to manage client satisfaction; provides guidance, assistance, and follow-up on client inquiries; and performs client computer hardware and software installations.

Responsibilities:

  • Customer services: Meet or exceed customer expectations by responding to client service requests in accordance with established service procedures and guidelines; work with company IT personnel to deliver quality service; review assigned service requests daily; follow up and provide status updates to clients; alert management, team members and other IT groups when sensitive issues arise or a major problem is suspected; minimize client downtime and productivity loss from technology malfunctions or installations.
  • Desktop support: Respond to the diverse client computer hardware and software problems reported by clients in accordance with established procedures and service guidelines; identify the cause, implement a solution, share solutions with peers, and document when necessary; take proactive steps whenever possible to prevent problems from recurring; use team members, peers, vendors, and other resources to resolve more complex problems as quickly as possible.
  • Software and hardware installs: Installation of all client related computer hardware and software as necessary, and participate in the evaluation of new products and standards by working in partnership with other IT team members; participate in the definition of standard installation and upgrade procedures to ensure smooth, nondisruptive release upgrades and configuration changes; suggest changes and alternatives when appropriate; follow up with clients to ensure satisfaction.
  • Project work: Work on special assignments and projects, such as new product rollouts, and balance project work with day-to-day problem-solving responsibilities; perform routine assignments according to predetermined schedules.
  • Support: Respond to calls and voice mails and emails within specified time frame; provide technical support via phone to remote clients (salesforce, manufacturing, distribution sites), utilizing all resources available to do so; monitor, prioritize, escalate, and dispatch calls that cannot be solved over the phone.
  • LAN administration: Be prepared and able to support the Network Engineer and senior IT staff in administration duties (ID adds, changes, resets and disable) on request, and provide guidance and consulting services in this area on an as-needed basis.
  • Continuous improvement: Continuously strive to improve client support; identify opportunities and recommend solutions for improving service efficiency and effectiveness; participate in initiatives to address service issues.  Provide comments/feedback/suggestions on ways to change/modify existing standards, policies, and procedures to enhance service quality and better service customers.

Skills and knowledge:

  • Fluency with all current Microsoft Windows Desktop operating systems
  • Good judgment and analytical ability essential for prioritizing support calls and emails, and client software/hardware installations (based on impact on the business, client urgency, and the individual nature of each problem/request); ability to know when and how to bring the correct resources to bear to expedite problem resolution/installations and deliver client satisfaction.
  • Excellent skills in dealing with unstructured problems that affect productivity of client computer users.
  • Professional manner in person, on the telephone, and via e-mail; excellent communications skills are essential to this position.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a high level of client trust and confidence in the IT team’s knowledge of and concern for the client’s business needs.
  • Strong technical knowledge of personal computer hardware/software systems in a large LAN/WAN environment.
  • A working knowledge of industry leading mobile devices such as smartphones and Tablets

Experience:

  • Two or more years of experience in an IT support or technical environment, with significant personal computer or client/server platform experience.
    • Experience in LAN/network administration or systems administration in a relevant computing environment highly desirable.
  • A+ or Network+ Technical Certification or other equivalent certification highly desirable.

Vanderbilt Chemicals, LLC is accepting applications for an Applications Chemist in the Norwalk Petroleum Applications Lab, based in the Corporate Office, Norwalk, CT.

Job Summary:
Individual will be responsible for becoming proficient in all Petroleum Applications Laboratory testing procedures and processes. They will be responsible for formatting, blending, and testing of lubricating formulations used in the automotive, industrial, aviation, electric vehicle, and grease segments of the Petroleum business.

The individual will also be responsible for supervising the laboratory when the Manager is not present and write project and monthly reports with direction from the lab manager.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Become proficient in maintaining, calibrating, running, and reporting results for all test procedures supported in Vanderbilt Chemicals Petroleum Applications Laboratory
  • Supervise activities of Petroleum Laboratory Personnel when the lab Manager is not present
  • Assist manager in developing the lab and laboratory staff, including training on instruments, developing lab procedures and work instructions, and growing skills for effective performance.
  • Provide input to lab manager for periodic and annual performance evaluations of laboratory staff.
  • Assist in maintaining general upkeep of the laboratory, including calibration/verification of instruments, purchasing supplies, and proper disposal of waste.
  • Assist lab manager with the proper evaluation of products by the most appropriate lubricant test methods.
  • Assist lab manager in writing monthly and project reports.
  • Assist lab manager in providing technical support to customers, sales and R&D.
  • Representing the company at technical conferences such as ASTM, STLE, and NLGI

Job Summary:
As a Senior Research Chemist specializing in synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry, you will be responsible for executing laboratory research aimed at improving existing products and developing innovative prototypes. You will interpret application performance data to develop structure-property relationships that guide new molecular targets for synthesis. Your expertise will contribute significantly to our product development, with a primary focus on solutions for the petroleum industry’s critical needs such as additives for hybrid and electric vehicles. You will collaborate closely with a team of talented chemists and engineers, applying your knowledge to drive advancements in our additive products.

Job Duties:
Process Optimization: Collaborate with the chemistry and engineering teams to support process improvement, reaction scale-up, laboratory sample preparation, process optimization, and new product development initiatives, ensuring the seamless integration of innovative solutions into our manufacturing processes safely and efficiently.

Synthesis and Characterization: Develop and synthesize novel additives tailored for various applications such as automotive, industrial, rubber, plastics, etc. Characterize compounds using a variety of analytical techniques such as NMR, mass spectrometry, and chromatography.

Research and Development: Stay updated with advancements in the field of additives for use in various applications. Conduct comprehensive literature, patent, electronic database searches to identify new strategies and methodologies to enhance the performance and sustainability of new and existing additives. 

Collaborative Innovation: Collaborate with fellow chemists, engineers, and technicians to enhance existing products and develop new technologies, focusing on antioxidants, anti-wear/EP additives, corrosion inhibitors, rust inhibitors, friction modifiers, and organometallic compounds.  Steward new technologies from bench-scale to pilot plant and eventual commercialization through the Company’s Integrated Business Planning Process.

Data Analysis and Reporting: Develop, analyze, interpret, and summarize scientific data. Use these data to prepare technical reports, present findings to internal and external stakeholders, and contribute to the preparation of scientific publications and patents.

Safety and Compliance: Adhere to strict safety protocols in lab environments. Ensure compliance with federal and state standards, such as OSHA, RCRA, CTDEEP,  and company policies. Maintain research laboratory equipment, instruments, and documentation, ensuring compliance with RCMS and ISO 9001 protocols and procedures.

Job Requirements:
Recent Ph.D. graduates with a passion for bench-scale research and development are encouraged to apply.

Education:

  • Ph.D. in synthetic organic and/or organometallic chemistry preferred.
  • M.S. with 5-10 years of relevant industrial benchwork experience will also be considered.
  • B.S. with a minimum of 10 years of relevant industrial benchwork experience may be considered.

Experience:

  • Expertise in method development and process scale-up.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment.
